Before cooking anything, verify that the valve can move from sealed to vent without sticking. If you have a spare unit, run a water test: add two cups of water, set to high pressure for 2 minutes, and then do a release.
Here's how to release pressure on an Instant Pot safely:
- Turn the knob from sealed to vent slowly, using a long spoon or tongs. Steam will shoot out fast.
- Keep your hands and face away from the steam jet.
- Wait until the float valve drops before opening the lid. That's the signal that pressure has equalized.

It's tempting to think 'all the presets cook the same, just faster.' But the release method changes texture by a ton. But if the heat comes with a loud buzzing or the temperature never stabilizes, that's when I start asking about warranty claims. Step 5: Get the Real Lifespan and Service Plan on Record
You can't inspect a lifespan, but you can make sure the warranty matches what the seller promises. For upright freezers, typical lifespan is 10-15 years under normal use. That number drops if the unit is placed in a hot room, if it's packed too tightly, or if the condenser coils are never cleaned.
When a supplier tells you 'this freezer will last 15 years,' ask them to put it in writing. Per FTC advertising guidelines, any explicit performance claim like that should be substantiated. If they won't write it down, it's a nice chat, not a guarantee. That's also the point where I ask for a transparent repair estimate. What's the cost of a door gasket replacement? Is the compressor covered under warranty for 7 years or 5? It's never a fun conversation, but it's better than a surprise invoice later.
I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included' before 'what's the price.' The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. That's true for repair plans, shipping, and every accessory you're buying.
Common Mistakes and Quick Reminders
Skipping the release test. It's the first thing I'd train every new hire on. If the float valve is up, the lid stays closed. Period.
Using the same release for all potatoes. Write it down on a spec sheet, or you'll get two different textures from two different cooks.
Treating compressor heat as an immediate failure. Check the airflow and the fan first. But if it's hot and noisy, trust your instinct and call your repair guy.
Letting freezer coils dust up. Six months of neglect can cut a 15-year lifespan down to 8 or 9 years real fast.
Doing random things with appliances just because they fit. I know it's not a kitchen appliance, but I once saw an employee with a temporary crown use an electric toothbrush on the highest setting because they thought 'more vibration = cleaner.' The crown popped off that afternoon. Can you brush a temporary crown with an electric toothbrush? Yes, but only with the soft setting and clearance from your dentist. Not everything works like a pressure cooker: more pressure is not always better.
